An example lesson screen. Jordan, the AI pupil, is approaching a large roundabout near the end of the drive, and the captions show what you and Jordan said.

How it works

  1. 1

    Pick a pupil

Choose from 8 pupils, each with their own personality, worries and goals. Read a short briefing, just as you would before a real lesson.

  2. 2

    Teach out loud

Talk to your AI pupil by voice. Agree the lesson while you're parked, then tap Move off. Scene cards like “Approaching a large roundabout” appear, and your pupil reacts.

  3. 3

    Get your scorecard

See a practice estimate against all 17 competencies, with quotes from what you said, tips, and the key moments to work on.

Practise somewhere quiet, never while driving. Headphones help the conversation run smoothly.

8 pupils to teach

Each one practises different parts of the test. Your free lesson can be either of the 2 marked Free. Finding out what your pupil really wants is part of the exercise.

A scorecard after every lesson

Every lesson is marked against the 17 competencies, from 0 to 3, like the real test. Tap any one to see why, with quotes from what you actually said and a tip to try next time.

You also see your habits, such as how much of the talking you did and how many open questions you asked, and a suggested next lesson.

Practice estimate. This is not a test result.

Lesson planning

  • 1.Did the trainer identify the pupil's learning goals and needs?
  • 2.Was the agreed lesson structure appropriate for the pupil's experience and ability?
  • 3.Were the practice areas suitable?
  • 4.Was the lesson plan adapted, when appropriate, to help the pupil work towards their learning goals?

A key moment

03:14You said: Look right. After the blue van there's a gap. You can go after the blue van.

You made the decision for Jordan. He stopped at the line anyway, because he hadn't worked out for himself that it was safe.

Try saying: What can you see coming from the right? When do you think you could go?

Questions

  • Is this the real test?

No. MockPupil is for practice. You teach an AI pupil out loud, then get a scorecard marked against the 17 competencies DVSA examiners use.

Your scorecard is a practice estimate, not a test result. It can't tell you whether you'll pass.

MockPupil is not affiliated with or endorsed by DVSA.

  • How does the AI pupil work?

You talk out loud, just as you would in the car. The AI pupil listens and answers by voice, in real time. You can interrupt it, like a real pupil.

You start parked, where you agree the lesson and talk about risk. When you tap "Move off", short scene cards appear, such as "Approaching a large roundabout". The pupil reacts to each one. Tap "Pull up" to finish with the debrief.

Each pupil has their own worries and goals. Finding them out with good questions is part of the exercise.

The pupil is a pupil only. It never teaches you, corrects you or comments on your teaching. That's what the scorecard is for.

  • What does the scorecard show?

It marks your teaching against the 17 competencies DVSA examiners use, in their 3 groups. Each competency gets a score from 0 to 3, shown as dots.

Open any competency to see why, with quotes from what you actually said and a tip. Three key moments show what you said, what happened next and a better line to try.

It also counts your habits, such as how much of the talking you did and how many open and closed questions you asked.

It never gives you a grade, or a pass or fail. It's a practice estimate, not a test result.

  • How is the real test marked?

In the real test, the examiner scores each of the 17 competencies from 0 to 3, then adds them up to a total out of 51. The total gives the result:

    • 0 to 30: Fail
    • 31 to 42: Grade B
    • 43 to 51: Grade A

You also fail straight away if:

    • you get a score of 7 or less in the 'risk management' category
    • the examiner stops the lesson because you've put yourself or someone else in danger

MockPupil never gives you a total or a grade. Your scorecard is a practice estimate, not a test result. It shows your scores in the same 3 groups, so you can see where to improve.

  • Does this replace my trainer?

No. MockPupil supports, and does not replace, training with a qualified trainer.

Use it to practise between sessions. Then go through your scorecards with your trainer and agree what to work on next.

  • Do I need headphones?

We recommend them. Headphones stop the AI pupil hearing its own voice through your speakers, so the conversation runs smoothly.

You can use a phone or a laptop. It just needs a working microphone.

  • Which browsers work?

On a computer, use Chrome, Edge or Safari. On an iPhone, use Safari or Chrome. On an Android phone, use Chrome.

Keep your browser up to date, and allow the microphone when it asks. If the microphone is blocked, the sound check shows you how to allow it.

  • Can I use it in the car?

No. Never use MockPupil while you're driving, or while you're supervising or teaching someone in a real car.

A lesson needs your full attention, and you talk out loud the whole time. Practise somewhere safe, for example at home.

  • Is my voice recorded?

We don't store any audio. During a lesson, your voice goes straight from your browser to Google's Gemini API, so the AI pupil can hear you and reply.

We use Google's paid service. Under its terms, Google doesn't use your voice to improve its products. It keeps logs for up to 55 days, only to detect and prevent misuse.

We do keep a text transcript of what you and the pupil said. We need it to mark your lesson, and you can read it on your scorecard. Deleting your account deletes it.

  • What does it cost?

Your first lesson is free: up to 5 minutes, in one of the 2 short scenarios marked Free, with a full scorecard. You don't need a card.

After that, the Monthly plan is £39 a month. You get up to 300 minutes of lessons a month, lessons of up to 20 minutes, and every scenario.

Unused minutes don't roll over to the next month. You can cancel any time.

  • Can I cancel?

Yes, any time. Go to your Account page and open Stripe's Customer Portal, where you can cancel your plan.

Your plan then stops renewing. You keep your minutes until the end of the month you've already paid for.

Changed your mind? If you cancel within 14 days of subscribing and haven't started a lesson on the plan, email us and we'll refund you in full.
